PEOPLE AND FAMILY FIRST

Why We Started

Because life’s hardest transitions deserve care you can trust.

A business built around people

Leaving a longtime home. Adjusting to a change in health. Sorting through a loved one’s belongings after a loss. These are deeply personal moments, and the people helping you should understand that.

Defining Heritage began with a simple conviction: people facing difficult transitions deserve honest guidance, practical help, and compassion. We wanted to build a business where a family’s circumstances shape the way we work, and where doing right by someone matters more than making the most from a project.

Our work in downsizing, estate sales, and transition services has only strengthened that conviction. We have met families who came to us after consultations with proposed charges far beyond what we believed their situation required. Some were navigating illness, disability, or the loss of someone they loved. They deserved clarity and support at a time when questioning a price or comparing providers could feel overwhelming.

Grief, uncertainty, and a person’s need for help should never be opportunities to take advantage of them. That belief is at the heart of why we started—and why we continue.

Integrity when no one would know

In the course of our work, we have found substantial amounts of money, treasured antiques, and sensitive financial records that families did not know were there. We promptly turned those discoveries over to the families we were helping.

Those belongings were never ours to keep. They were part of someone’s life, security, and family history, entrusted to our care.

Inviting someone into your home, or asking them to help with a loved one’s estate, requires enormous trust. We believe that trust should be honored just as carefully in the quiet moments as in the promises made during a consultation.

Room for real life

A plan can change. Health can worsen. A family can face an expense or a complication no one anticipated. When that happens, empathy and flexibility belong in the conversation.

When exceptional circumstances have made it difficult for a client to follow through, we have chosen to finish with little or no profit—and sometimes to accept a modest loss—to help that person through. Those decisions reflect something fundamental about Defining Heritage: the people involved matter beyond the transaction.

We listen, reassess, and look for a practical way forward together. Every situation deserves to be understood on its own terms.

The same dignity, in every home

Thoughtful, attentive service should come with warmth. Whatever your financial means, health, abilities, or circumstances, you deserve patience, respect, and a voice in the decisions that affect your life.

We care deeply about the quality of our work and about exceeding our clients’ expectations. That means paying attention to the details, following through, and understanding what a good outcome means to the person we are helping.

Defining Heritage is an independent business with a personal commitment to the communities we serve. Our purpose is to help people and families feel supported through change, with their dignity and trust intact.

People and family first. That is why we started. It is how we choose to work.
